The recent speculations have been confirmed. Kiran Rao's film Lapata Ladies will represent India at the 2025 Oscars. This news was shared in a statement released by the Film Federation of India on Monday. The film will compete in the foreign language film category.
According to the statement, Lapata Ladies portrays Indian women with a balance of submission and authority. The film conveys a strong message to women not only in India but across the globe through its powerful characters. The production team believes the film is significant for women's empowerment worldwide. A total of 29 films entered the Oscar race from India.
Among the contenders were Animal, Sreekanth, Tamil film Bajhai, Malayalam film Ottam, and Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix winner All We Imagine As Light. However, the jury, led by Janu Barua, selected Lapata Ladies. After receiving the news, Kiran expressed her pride in the selection, acknowledging the hard work of the entire team. She hopes the film will touch global audiences just as it has in India. Released in March, Lapata Ladies was well-received by both viewers and critics alike. The screenplay was written by Biplab Goswami from Bengal.
