IIT Bombay has fined students for allegedly insulting Lord Ram in a play called "Rahoban." The play, performed during the annual Performing Arts Festival on March 31, reportedly hurt Hindu sentiments by portraying Ramayana characters controversially.
The drama gained popularity, especially for the dialogue between Sita and Lakshman, with video clips going viral. However, some viewers claimed the play depicted the main characters and Hindu culture negatively. Others argued it highlighted tribal society from a women's perspective without insulting anyone. Following complaints, IIT Bombay formed a disciplinary committee. The committee interrogated the students involved and decided on heavy fines. Graduating students are fined 1.2 lakh rupees each, equivalent to a semester's tuition. They will also miss out on convocation recognition. Other students must pay 40,000 rupees and will lose hostel privileges.
This severe punishment has sparked debate. Many are questioning why such harsh measures are necessary for a play. The controversy continues as the institute stands by its decision, emphasizing the need to respect cultural and religious sentiments.
