At least 25 people have died and 60 are under treatment in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district after consuming a poisonous substance. The administration reported the incident on Thursday, with the death toll expected to rise as several victims remain in critical condition at the district government hospital and JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research).
The tragedy unfolded on Wednesday night when many fell ill after consuming the toxic substance. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has vowed strict action against those responsible. He expressed his condolences on social media, saying, "I am shocked by this incident. My deepest sympathies to the families of those who died. All those responsible have been arrested. Strict action will be taken against officials who failed to prevent this incident."
Governor RN Ravi also expressed his grief, urging the government to enhance surveillance to prevent such incidents. "I am worried about the deaths due to poisoning in Kallakurichi. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. Such incidents are reported often, which is very worrying," he said. The state administration is now focused on treating the survivors and preventing future tragedies.
